Hospice

Hospice is a special way of caring for terminally-ill people that helps them live their final days to the fullest when curative treatments are no longer effective. It is a comprehensive program of interdisciplinary services which is designed to meet the unique needs of people with life-limiting illnesses and the needs of their families, including bereavement counseling. Hospice helps the terminally-ill remain in their homes or in a home-like care facility during their last illness and allows them to be as free as possible from disabling pain and mental anguish.

The Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Washington, in cooperation with hospices serving the Washington metropolitan area, offers the following listing of providers as a resource to families anticipating the death of a loved one as a result of terminal illness. When calling with regard to beginning the process of hospice care, please ask for the admissions director of the hospice.

Capital Caring

Capital Caring (formerly Capital Hospice) provides in-home hospice and palliative care in the Washington, D.C. region. The main office is located in Falls Church, VA, but satellite offices are found in Washington, D.C., Largo, MD, and multiple locations in Northern Virginia. Inpatient care facilities are located in Arlington, Virginia and Aldie, Virginia.

Optum Palliative and Hospice Care provides care to people facing a serious illness or at the end of life using an interdisciplinary approach that helps to reduce suffering for the patient and loved ones and helps them continue to live each day to the fullest. Palliative care can be part of hospice care or a stand-alone service for those who are receiving curative therapies. Hospice care is offered when curative treatments are no longer effective. Optum also offers bereavement services to families and loved ones.

Holy Cross Home Care and Hospice

Holy Cross Home Care and Hospice emphasizes the importance of allowing terminally ill patients to stay in home environment, whether that is at their family home, an assisted living facility, a group home, or a nursing home. We also provide in-hospital hospice care at Holy Cross Hospital and in-patient hospice care at Sanctuary at Holy Cross, a full-service nursing and rehabilitation center. Regardless of where services are delivered, the interdisciplinary team at Holy Cross Hospice works with patients, families, and doctors to create a plan of terminal illness support and end-of-life palliative care tailored to each person’s individual medical, social, emotional, practical, and spiritual needs.

Hospice of St. Mary’s

Founded in 1981, Hospice of St. Mary’s provides in-home hospice care and has a six-bed Hospice House facility. Using an interdisciplinary approach, Hospice of St. Mary’s provides support and comfort to patients for whom curative treatments are no longer effective. Hospice of St. Mary’s accepts all patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance companies cover hospice care. The Board of Directors ensures ongoing support through fundraising, which helps offset the cost of care for those who are not insured.

Montgomery Hospice

Montgomery Hospice offers in-home hospice care and has an inpatient facility called Casey House which is recommended when a patient’s pain and symptoms can no longer be managed safely or appropriately at home. Patients can move in and out of Casey House as the situation requires.
